    Intra and Inter organisational determinants of electronic-based traceability adoption: evidences from the French agri-food industry

    Traceability, the ability to trace the origin of products throughout the supply chain, has become an instrument to assure food quality and safety in agri-food chains. This process is organized within both institutional and market constraints, yet it integrates also a technological sphere marked by the unprecedented development of information and communication technologies. This paper analyses the factors influencing firms’ behaviour, with regards to adopting electronic-based traceability, in the French agri-food industry. These factors (microeconomic determinants) related to firms’ internal characteristics and the factors related to their environment. We use data from the ICT and Electronic Commerce survey from 2002, carried out by the French National Institute of Statistics (INSEE). A Probit type model is used, which allow us to take into account the firm’s determinants for its organisational choice, differentiating from those adopting (or not) an electronic-based traceability tool. Our main results show that the choices of electronic-based traceability depend on and interact with their own organizational characteristics and those of their competitive, industrial and local environment. Traceability technologies evidence the complementarities between organisational and technological practices. Large industrial firms known for their established identity and a brand image seem distant from standard traceability practices, contrarily to agribusinesses, which are subjected to regulations and look forward to use traceability for both complying with their downstream contracts and add value to their regional specificities.Traceability, Technology adoption, Agri-food industry, Agribusiness, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

    Analysis of Quiet-Sun Internetwork Magnetic Fields Based on Linear Polarization Signals

    We present results from the analysis of Fe I 630 nm measurements of the quiet Sun taken with the spectropolarimeter of the Hinode satellite. Two data sets with noise levels of 1.2{\times}10-3 and 3{\times}10-4 are employed. We determine the distribution of field strengths and inclinations by inverting the two observations with a Milne-Eddington model atmosphere. The inversions show a predominance of weak, highly inclined fields. By means of several tests we conclude that these properties cannot be attributed to photon noise effects. To obtain the most accurate results, we focus on the 27.4% of the pixels in the second data set that have linear polarization amplitudes larger than 4.5 times the noise level. The vector magnetic field derived for these pixels is very precise because both circular and linear polarization signals are used simultaneously. The inferred field strength, inclination, and filling factor distributions agree with previous results, supporting the idea that internetwork fields are weak and very inclined, at least in about one quarter of the area occupied by the internetwork. These properties differ from those of network fields. The average magnetic flux density and the mean field strength derived from the 27.4% of the field of view with clear linear polarization signals are 16.3 Mx cm-2 and 220 G, respectively. The ratio between the average horizontal and vertical components of the field is approximately 3.1.     Anodized aluminium pressure sensitive paint: effect of paint application technique

    The porous surface of the Anodized Aluminium Pressure Sensitive Paint (AA-PSP) is what differentiates it from conventional sol–gel based PSPs, leading to a faster response time of the paint. The objective of the current study is to examine the effect of the paint application technique, i.e., whether the AA substrate is dipped or sprayed, on the pressure and temperature sensitivity. A more practical procedure for preparing the AA samples is also presented. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images are acquired together with the calibration of the AA-PSP at various temperatures and pressures to determine the effectiveness of each application technique. The results revealed that the AA sample which was dipped in the PSP solution shows a higher pressure sensitivity than the sprayed one. The SEMs show that spraying leads to the covering up of the micropores created on the surface and undermining the benefit of anodization

    Abstract—The use of Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) technology is increasing due to the use of Internet and multimedia applications with strict requirements of end–to–end delay and jitter, through wireless devices. The IEEE 802.16 standard, which defines the physical (PHY) and the medium access control (MAC) layers, is one of the BWA standards. Its MAC layer is centralized basis, where the Base Station (BS) is responsible for assigning the needed bandwidth for each Subscriber Station (SS), which requests bandwidth competing between all of them. The standard defines a contention resolution process to resolve the potential occurrence of collisions during the requesting process. In this paper, we propose to modify the contention resolution process to improve the network performance, including end–to–end delay and throughput

    Steady State Entanglement in Cavity QED

    We investigate steady state entanglement in an open quantum system, specifically a single atom in a driven optical cavity with cavity loss and spontaneous emission. The system reaches a steady pure state when driven very weakly. Under these conditions, there is an optimal value for atom-field coupling to maximize entanglement, as larger coupling favors a loss port due to the cavity enhanced spontaneous emission. We address ways to implement measurements of entanglement witnesses and find that normalized cross-correlation functions are indicators of the entanglement in the system. The magnitude of the equal time intensity-field cross correlation between the transmitted field of the cavity and the fluorescence intensity is proportional to the concurrence for weak driving fields.Comment: enhanced discussion, corrected formulas, title change, 1 added figur
